The back-up band includes Grammy winner Bob Enos on trumpet, Paul Geremia and Jim Bennett on guitar, Bob Briggs on bass, Diana Grey and Emily Estes on back-up vocals, Rick Dishman and Mark Topp on drums, Art Manchester on clarinet and sax and Mike Turk on chromatic harmonica.
Recorded at Earth Audio Techniques in North Ferrisburg, Vermont in 1980, with additional tracks and several tunes added at Le Studio in Boston a year later.
"The Barn," as musicians who recorded at Earth Audio Techniques came to know it, was a terrific place to work. The equipment was completely up-to-date, but the cavernous converted cow barn with its huge picture windows offering sweeping views of the Vermont hills and Mt. Philo provided a balance for the adrenaline.
Le Studio had its own charm, being upstairs from a Dunkin' Donuts on Boylston Street. While trying (with increasing frustration) to overdub back-up voices for the chorus in "Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar," Jack and his crew took a coffee break and recruited a few patrons and a counterperson from the Dunkin' Donuts. Theirs wound up being the voices you hear. |
